NES Assets Workshop (NAW)

Edit: NAW is now on itch.io! Name your price:

NAW is going to be a tool meant for creating various NES compliant graphics. Tiles, Metatiles, Backgrounds and Metasprites. Currently it’s in the early stages. I’ve created this page to gather the progress reports I’ve published over time all in one place.

Cannot place tiles yet and it doesn’t have any tools other than a 1px pen, so it’s pretty much useless so far. But you can download it here. It requires Windows to run. Your anti virus might give a warning since the executable has no signature. It’s an issue with GMS2 applications. Just wait for the verification to end and it should restart automatically.

Current feature set:

  • Save: only CHR for now.
  • Export screen with sprites as a working mapper 0 NES ROM.
  • Palette editing.
  • CHR drawing.
  • Nametable drawing. Regular: sets pixel color and attribute area. Hold Control: only draw pixel. Hold Shift: only draw attribute.
  • Undo/Redo (menu or with ctrl+Z and ctrl+Y shortcuts).
  • Zooming and panning (hold space to pan or select the pan tool).

  • Grid every tile, every metatile, or off.
  • Automatic metatile generator. 2×2 tiles mode only.

  • Select colors with keyboard shortcuts.
  • Pan and Pen tools work.
  • Several PPU control and PPU mask registers: toggle bg CHR address, toggle bg drawing, toggle spr drawing, toggle leftmost 8px bg drawing, toggle leftmost 8px spr drawing.
  • Can import a special PPU dump from fceux that includes the state of ppu control register, ppu mask register, and also all OAM data. So the complete package. This is from a modification I’ve made to Fceux. It could be interesting to somehow get this mod onto the official build one day.

  • Has a built-in NSF player.
  • Take a full screenshot of the entire application with the F12 key.
